7th Grade Lesson on Energy
ENGAGE - This online video from Nova would be a great “engage” activity for your students on the principles of kinetic and potential energy.
WHY – The engage phase of the 5 E’s is where students are introduced to a new concept. Students are then asked to make connections to prior knowledge and what is to be studied. This short video clip can help students to become mentally engaged in this new learning experience.
EXPLORE - Use this online interactive for the explore stage. Here students can explore how a Roller Coaster transforms potential energy into kinetic energy.
WHY - In this phase of the 5 E’s, the student explores activities that provide them with a common base of experiences. This online interactive can help students identify and develop concepts, processes, and skills as they actively explore and manipulate materials.
EXPLAIN - Here is another interactive Roller Coaster site that allows the user to design a Roller Coaster and then check to make sure it is safe.
WHY – The explain phase of the 5 E’s helps students describe the concepts they have been exploring. It also gives students the opportunities to verbalize their conceptual understanding or to demonstrate new skills or behaviors. This phase also provides opportunities for teachers to introduce formal terms, definitions, and explanations for concepts, processes, skills, or behaviors.
This lesson gives students a fun and interactive way to explain the concepts of potential and kinetic energy.
Here is a link to Discovery Education Science lesson plan that uses the above Roller Coaster interactive.
